The LG group was founded in 1947 by Ben Mao's grandson Association. In 1995, Ben Mao took charge of his father, and began to lead the LG group, helping to make LG electronics and other subsidiaries become international players.
In addition to consumer electronics, LG is also a leader in the field of displays, telecommunications, chemicals and rechargeable batteries.
LG said he had received several operations in 2017 and this year and was sent to the Seoul National University hospital for treatment after his health deteriorated recently.
After his illness, he was handed over to his younger brother, Koo Bon-joon, vice president of LG group.
Ben Mao has two daughters, one adopted son, and the latter is regarded as the successor of the LG group.
On Thursday, the LG group announced that it would hold an emergency shareholders meeting to elect Ben Mao's Koo Kwang-mo as an internal director to ensure that the company would not have a power vacuum because of its condition.
LG said in its regulatory paper: "LG group decided to convene this meeting in Seoul headquarters in June 29th. The decision has been approved by the board and has been informed to the Korean stock exchange. "
