BMW. DE, the German luxury car maker, will become the first foreign car maker to complete the move by acquiring multi-control rights from its main Chinese joint venture, BMW Brilliance Automotive. The Beijing authorities are ready to deregulation of the ownership of foreign joint ventures by foreign car companies.
BMW said in a statement that it would pay 3.6 billion euros ($4.2 billion) to increase its stake in Morning BMW from 50% to 75%. The deal will be completed in 2022, when China will lift the cap on foreign ownership.
At a time when import costs are rising as a result of the Sino-US trade war, the move should boost profits for automakers in the Chinese market and push them to shift more vehicle manufacturing to China.
BMW said that the duration of the joint venture will be extended from 2028 to 2040.
