Japan's export growth fell sharply to 0.1% in November, as the growth of exports to the United States and China slowed sharply, suggesting that slowing external demand and Sino-US trade disputes may undermine Japan's economic strength in the coming year.
Japan's exports in November increased by 0.1% over the same period last year, less than the 1.8% increase expected by Reuters analysts, and much less than the 8.2% increase in October.
Such trade data highlight the rising external risks to Japan's export-dependent economy. The Bank of Japan holds a policy meeting this week, which ends on Thursday.
Given that consumer price growth is still low, it is widely expected that the Bank of Japan will maintain its current ultra-loose policy.
Japan's exports to the United States grew by 1.6% in November compared with the same period last year, mainly driven by exports of aircraft engines and semiconductor manufacturing equipment, a jump of 11.6% from October.
Exports to the United States fell 7.0% to 163,586 vehicles.
US President Trump criticized Japan and China on trade issues and threatened to impose high import tariffs on Japanese automobiles. About two-thirds of Japan's annual trade surplus with the United States of America is automobile exports.
Japan's imports from the United States increased by 8.1% in November from a year earlier, mainly feed corn, drugs and oil products, which reduced its trade surplus with the United States by 5.4% to 623.4 billion yen ($5.55 billion), the fifth consecutive month of year-on-year decline.
Japan's exports to China grew by 0.4% year-on-year in November, a sharp slowdown from 9.0% in October. The growth in November was mainly driven by exports of plastics, heavy oil and automobiles.
Exports to Asia fell by 1.9%, the first decline in nine months.
