Volkswagen Germany (VOWG_p.DE) is still the world's best-selling car company, which is the company's fifth consecutive year to maintain this honor. But in light vehicles, the Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi alliance is slightly ahead of Volkswagen.
After Wednesday's latest data were released, Reuters calculated that 10.76 million passenger and light commercial vehicles were sold by Renault (RENA.PA), Nissan (7201.T) and Mitsubishi (7211.T) in 2018. The group does not sell heavy trucks.
Nissan announced Wednesday that it sold 5.65 million cars last year, down 2.8% from the previous year. Mitsubishi automobile sales grew 18% to 1.22 million last year. Renault sold 3.88 million vehicles, an increase of 3.2% over the previous year.
Volkswagen said earlier this month that its sales, including MAN and Scania heavy trucks, rose 0.9% last year to a record 10.83 million vehicles. Sales, excluding heavy trucks, amounted to 10.6 million vehicles.
Toyota (7203.T) still ranks third, with sales of 10.59 million vehicles last year announced Wednesday, including Toyota and Lexus brands, minivans produced by Daihatsu subsidiary, and light and heavy trucks produced by the truck division Hino (7205.T).
Toyota sold 10.39 million vehicles last year, excluding Hino trucks. Toyota has said it expects to sell 10.76 million vehicles in 2019.
