Italy's cabinet vice minister, Giancarlo Giorgetti, said on Monday that the ruling coalition party will support a preliminary agreement to join China's "one belt and one road" project, provided that the project can help export enterprises without threatening Italy's strategic interests.
In an interview with reporters, Giorgetti said Italy has a gold stake to protect strategic industries such as defense, energy, transportation and communications.
Despite protests from the United States, Italian Prime Minister Conde said on Friday that when Chinese President Xi Jinping visits Italy later this month, he may sign a memorandum of understanding.
