Bloomberg News reported late Monday that US President Trump had recently talked privately about withdrawing from the post-war security treaty with Japan, which he believed was unfair to the United States.
But the report quoted people familiar with the matter as saying that Trump had not taken any steps in this regard and that such actions were unlikely to occur.
According to the report, Trump believed that the treaty, which had been signed for more than 60 years, was unilaterally disadvantageous to the United States because the Japanese military had no obligation to assume the responsibility of American defense.
Bloomberg said Trump also talked about claims for the relocation of the U.S. military base in Okinawa.
Trump is currently making every effort to implement the US Priority Program, which requires a two-way agreement on foreign policy and international trade.
