U.S. and Chinese trade negotiators moved to Shanghai this week for the first face-to-face consultation since the truce consensus was reached during the G20 summit last month. China and the United States have been struggling to resolve deep differences to end the trade war, and this time they are ready to change their environment.
Due to the low expectations of all parties for the progress of the two-day talks in Shanghai, both officials and business circles hope that China and the United States can at least make a detailed commitment to show "goodwill" posture and clear the way for future negotiations.
The trade war between the world's two largest economies has unsettled global financial markets. This week's policy meeting of the Federal Reserve and renewed concerns about Britain's withdrawal from the European Union have also put pressure on global financial markets.
Trump told reporters at the White House that the U.S. -China trade negotiations are progressing smoothly, but he added that the United States "either reached a major agreement or did not reach an agreement at all".
"We will wait and see," he told reporters.
