When U.S. Trade Representative Lethizer and Treasury Secretary Nuchin arrived in Shanghai on Tuesday, Trump accused the Chinese government of delaying negotiations on Twitter and warned China that the outcome would be worse if it continued to delay.
This week's talks in Shanghai are the first face-to-face talks since last month's G20 summit. China's official manufacturing survey released Wednesday showed that manufacturing activity shrank for the third consecutive month in July, highlighting the growing pressure on China from the US-China trade war.
On Wednesday morning at the West Suburb Hotel in Shanghai, Chinese Vice Premier Liu He shook hands with Lethizer and Nuchin in front of the media and then began today's consultations, but officials did not speak publicly.
The trade dispute has lasted for more than a year, with the two world's largest economies imposing import tariffs on each other's goods, disrupting global supply chains and shaking financial markets.
A source familiar with the discussions told Reuters earlier that the focus of the Shanghai talks was expected to be on "friendly" postures, such as China's commitment to buy American agricultural products and measures taken by the United States to relax sanctions against Huawei, a Chinese telecommunications equipment giant.
