U.S. President Trump attacked European Union trade barriers on Friday and again threatened to impose tariffs on European automobiles if he failed to see progress in deadlocked negotiations between the two sides.
Trump made the remarks shortly after signing an agreement to increase U.S. beef exports to Europe. When he signed the agreement, he said that the U.S. government was working on a plan to impose a 25% tariff on all Mercedes-Benz and BMW entering our country, which shocked the people present. Then he said he was just kidding.
"The European Union has created huge obstacles for us," Trump later told reporters at the White House. "They are very, very difficult to overcome."
Trump said the threat of auto tariffs might help push the EU to accept beef trade, but auto tariffs remain an option.
"Car tariffs will never be excluded from the list," Trump said. "If I don't get what we want, I'll levy car tariffs... If I don't get what I want, I have no choice but to do it. But so far, they have done very well.
Peter Beyer, Germany's transatlantic coordinator, said the beef agreement showed that progress could be made if the two sides cooperated constructively. He called for new efforts to reach broader trade agreements.
