Japan and the United States agreed to reach a broad bilateral trade agreement by September to resolve their differences over beef and car tariffs, Japan Economic News reported Sunday.
U.S. President Trump urged Tokyo to speed up trade negotiations, open up Japan's politically sensitive agricultural market and limit Japan's car exports to the United States.
Japan's Economic News quoted sources as saying that Japan's Minister of Economic Regeneration, Mitsuki Maki, and U.S. Trade Representative Letterheiser reached a consensus during their meeting in Washington, with the goal of reaching an agreement in September.
According to the report, Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe and US President Trump will meet on the margin of the UN General Assembly in New York at the end of September, and the two sides hope to reach a comprehensive trade agreement before then.
After meeting with Lethizer on Friday, Maki Minchong told reporters that the two sides had made "great progress" in narrowing trade differences and agreed to hold a ministerial meeting again later this month.
