China's foreign ministry said Wednesday that the United States has "weaponized" the visa issue, and that Chinese space officials have not been able to obtain visas from the United States in time or even at all to attend international meetings in Washington. This is the latest sign of the escalation of tensions between China and the United States.
Hua Chunying, a spokesman for China's foreign ministry, said the Chinese aerospace delegation had hoped to attend the IAF conference in Washington.
She said that China is an important participant in the conference and sends delegations to attend it every year. China hosted the event in 2013.
Hua Chunying said that China applied for a visa in July and the delegation of China's National Space Administration went to the U.S. Embassy in China on October 12 for a face-to-face signature. But until the day of the meeting, the head of the Chinese delegation still did not get a U.S. visa.
"This has prevented the Chinese delegation from going to the United States as scheduled to attend the opening ceremony of this year's IAF conference." Hua said several other members of the delegation also did not receive U.S. visas.
The U.S. embassy said it was unable to discuss visa cases because they are classified under U.S. law. The State Department did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
Wu Yanhua, deputy director of China's National Space Administration, was the only official absent from Monday's IAF conference, a panel of heads of space agencies from Germany, Russia, India, the United States, France and Japan.
