"The EU fully agrees on the need to delay brexit," said an EU official, after ambassadors from 27 member states who would remain in the EU held a meeting to discuss the matter, less than a week before the current deadline for brexit, October 31.
The official said that "the relevant work of brexit will continue over the weekend" and the ambassadors of Member States will meet again in Brussels on Monday or Tuesday next week.
Johnson said on Friday that it would be up to the European Union to decide on the length of the extension, a day after he admitted that he could not lead the UK out of Europe by the October 31 deadline to fulfill his promise of "success without success is benevolence".
"Of course, it's still possible to leave on October 31 - we could leave on October 31 - but unfortunately it depends on the decision of the EU," Johnson said. "He added that if the opposition obstructed his efforts to hold a general election on December 12, his minority government would not participate in the meaningless" brexit "debate in Parliament.
EU ambassadors were supposed to discuss the deadline for the extension of the third brexit, but the diplomats decided to "let the bullets fly for a while" to observe developments in London.
One EU diplomat said France urged the remaining 26 member states to wait a little and preferred to postpone the withdrawal until November 15 or 30, so as to continue to pressure the British Parliament to approve Johnson's agreement, or face disorderly withdrawal.
