Due to the implementation of home-based order in many countries to control the spread of the epidemic and the sudden drop of automobile demand, the long-term impact of the global economy is highly uncertain.
Analysts expect this to prevent consumers from buying new cars, reducing global car sales by about a third in 2020, compared with an 11 per cent drop after the global financial crisis.
Toyota (7203. T), Nissan (7201. T), Honda (7267. T) and four other major Japanese automakers reported sales of about 1.82 million vehicles last month, down from about 2.77 million in the same period last year.
In the year to the end of March, global sales fell 7.3% to 26.5 million vehicles, the lowest in four years, according to figures released by individual automakers on Tuesday.
Toyota, Japan's largest carmaker, sold 779151 vehicles in March, down 22.6% from a year earlier. Sales decreased by 1.4% to 10456593 units in the whole fiscal year.
