Washington (Reuters) - as the U.S. government restricts chip exports to China, several Republican senators urged President trump to avoid harming U.S. chip manufacturers, saying the chip industry is crucial to fighting the epidemic and the U.S. economy.
In a letter dated Wednesday, six senators expressed concern about the new rules issued by the U.S. Department of Commerce last week, which may restrict the export of chips and other technologies to China in case they are used for military purposes.
One of the new rules is to expand the definition of military buyers, or to allow the U.S. government to prevent the sale of products such as semiconductor manufacturing equipment to China.
The rules and another will take effect in June, and do not allow the industry to comment on the final version. The new rules also remove exceptions that allow certain U.S. technologies to be exported to non military entities and used for non military purposes without a license.
"We are concerned that the Ministry of Commerce has released several final versions of the new regulations related to semiconductors, without consultation with the industry or due consideration of the impact on the economy," the senator wrote.
