On May 21, Dr Anthony Fauci, an American infectious diseases expert, said he was "cautiously optimistic" about the development of new crown vaccine by Moderna.
Previously, on May 18, Moderna, a biological company cooperating with the National Institute of allergy and infectious diseases (NIAID), announced that the company's new coronavirus vaccine phase 1 test results were positive. Of the 45 human subjects in the first phase of the clinical trial, 8 produced a neutralizing antibody related to preventing the virus from infecting humans. In these subjects, two weeks after the second dose of vaccine, the level of neutralizing antibody against the new coronavirus reached or was higher than that seen in rehabilitation patients.
But then, some vaccine experts raised doubts about the vaccine of Moderna. On the one hand, the company did not publish the test results in medical journals, but only issued press releases; on the other hand, for the eight subjects who produced neutralizing antibodies, they did not further disclose their age and other key information, nor the results of the other 37 subjects.
In an interview with CNN, Antony Fauci, President of the National Institute of allergy and infectious diseases, said that the vaccine is still in the early stage of research and the results are inconclusive, and said: "we are cautious and optimistic about this.".
