The U.S. Department of Commerce announced on Friday that gross domestic product (GDP) grew by 2.9% last year, confirming the estimates released in March. The Department of Commerce's annual revision of GDP data also shows that the U.S. economy grew by 2.5% in the 12 months to the fourth quarter of 2018, down from 3.0% previously announced.
U.S. President Trump has stressed that year-on-year growth data prove that tax cuts and government spending have put the U.S. economy on a sustainable path of strong growth. But these measures have also pushed up the federal deficit.
The White House and Republicans argue that large-scale tax cuts, including a cut in corporate tax rates from 35% to 21%, will pay for themselves through strong economic growth. Democrats criticized tax cuts for benefiting the wealthy at the expense of the middle class.
The latest revised GDP data for 2018 and signs of a second-quarter slowdown in the U.S. economy, boosted by the accumulation of exports and unsold goods stocks in the first quarter of 2019, make the White House and Republicans increasingly untenable.
Trump liked to show off the economy as one of his greatest achievements in his first term, announcing last July that his government had "achieved a historic economic recovery". In the election campaign, Trump boasted that Haikou could increase annual GDP growth to 4%.
